The Stranger

It was late in the night, I heard a knock on the door
At this hour just who could that be
Out of bed and half mad, now what is this for
I guess I just have to go and see

I opened the door wide, with a careful look in my eye
You never know who will be on the other side of the door
It was a hungry old man, looked like he’d never been fed
Barely had the strength to knock on the door

He asked if I had anything that he could eat
It was cold outside, I told him to come on in
Get out of the cold and be where there’s some heat
I knew that being hungry was no great sin

A humble man he was, as he stepped in
I fixed a pot of coffee, leftovers were all that I had
He said, " Thank you sir ", with a big grin
"You see son, well for me times have been bad"

His clothes were ragged, worn to a thread
He was about to walk out of his shoes
It was a wonder he wasn’t dead
But I knew that he came to give me good news

He ate like a hungry man, which is what he was
We talked for hours and gallons of coffee did we drink
I knew that he was there because
What he told me would make me think

In his poor shamble of a way, he had a certain glow
Kind of like an angel, and a story to tell
Not sure why, but this I know
He knew I was going through Hell

He told me, "Son, I’ve been all over the world here and there
You can see by my clothes, how ragged they are
Not many people like me, all I have is a prayer
And what they say of me, well it leaves a scar"

The sun was about to come up in the East, it was a new day
The old man said it was time for him to go
I wanted him to stay
My heart was heavy, I wanted to know

He had to leave, I wanted to know his name
He said, as he walked out the door
"My name is the truth, that is my main claim to fame
But thank you for letting me walk through your door"

He was the best stranger that I’ve ever met
Thank God I got up that night
And for him I have my table set
For the Stranger, he showed me the light
