The Battleground

A flag is waving, a soldier is waving goodbye
Rain drops are falling, tear drops hit the ground
Lighting, like a laser gun from the sky
Like an earthquake, and a terrible sound

Freedom is at stake, the fight must be fought
As they head for the battleground
For what is right is what is sought
But that’s not always what is found

Hearts are broken, lies are told
Words become bullets that are fired fast
What will the future hold
Will it be better than the past

Bombs and fire fights with no end in sight
When you’re asleep you’re wide awake
A nightmare, day or at night
Is there no end, for God’s sake

The wounds and the ugly scars they make
And tears were the blood they bled
And the battleground will shake
Until their eyes are blood red

Fatigue and heartbreak, still you struggle on everyday
No compromise and no white flag in this kind of war
Just that price that one has to pay
And you are praying to God that there’ll be no more

It’s a battle of good over evil, who’s right and who’s wrong
And it’s a soldier's duty to fight for his ground
Maybe just in his heart, no matter how long
Maybe that is his battleground

So that his flag will not be at half mast
But flying high, and a future to look forward to
And try to forget about the past
Let the battleground die, the time is due

Once a young man, these years of battle made him old
He wants to go home again
His fight is fought and his story has been told
So a new life can begin

This is a story of anyone who has ever been to war
The things you see, the things you hear
You never come back the same, you just don't want any more
There’ll always be a battleground, this is what we fear
