It was the summer of 1968, just out of high school
He was young and didn’t have a care
Thought he was smart, but probably just a young fool
Little did he know he didn’t have much of a prayer

Then one day he got a letter from an Uncle he didn’t know
Uncle Sam said in his letter, well, it’s your time to come see me
It’s your time to go
And here is where you’ll be

They put him in a place where he was taught to kill
To hate, and be mean, they told him he had to fight a war somewhere
To a place that he didn’t know, that’s where they sent Bill
And it wasn’t fair

He grew up fast, because of the things he saw
He thought he was going crazy, almost everyday
It wasn’t like this back in Utah
But his best weapon was the time that he could pray

It was a firefight one night, Bill was on the run
He was crazy blind from the smoke
When he ran into the enemy's gun
Hit in the chest, he fell, couldn’t breathe, he was about to choke

He didn’t come home a hero
He was spit on, but he did come home
They all told him he was a zero
What he fought for cost him his home

They say it finally drove him crazy and out of his head
Now he’s homeless, and begs on the street for something to eat
And thinks to himself, he would have been better off dead
And they look at him as just another bum on the street

On his last night, Jack Frost was there by Bill on that cold night
Surrounded by angels and a cardboard house that he laid in
He was homeless, he was a hero and God told him it would be all right
What they did to you was a sin

That was Bill's last night, but he was not homeless, he was finally free
The angels took Bill away to a warmer place
To a place where Jack Frost and Satan will never be
And Soldier Bill finally got to see God's face
